The world’s very first plastic-free pop-up store has made its debut at Ekoplaza Lab in Amsterdam. If you thought you couldn’t do without plastic food and beverage packaging, think again! You’ll find no fewer than 1370 plastic-free organic products in their own special section of the store. Plastic packaging is used for a few days, but has a devastating impact on our planet for centuries. Ekoplaza Lab and this website are just the beginning of our plastic-free movement. We’re working towards a plastic-free aisle in every Ekoplaza, and even more!
Note: Ekoplaza Lab has closed since April 25. All plastic-free products are available in every Ekoplaza store.
On the road to a 100% plastic-free world
To us, organic food isn’t just carefully grown and prepared. Our core values are also about health and environmental accountability, and as part of our strongly held corporate philosophy we’ve decided to abandon products that are packaged in one or more layers of plastic. We’re fed up with it, and so are our customers!
We’ve found an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging, in the form of innovative compostable biomaterials. And we’ve taken the first step towards a healthy, plastic-free world. That’s what makes shopping at Ekoplaza different. You don’t have to worry about the hidden side effects of what you buy: what you see is what you get.
We’re not there yet, but we’ve taken on the challenge.
We’re ready for change. Are you?
We created Ekoplaza LAB in cooperation with the British environmental action group A Plastic Planet. We hope that other supermarkets in the Netherlands and the UK will soon follow in our footsteps.
Sian Sutherland, the group’s co-founder, says: "The introduction of the world's first plastic-free pop-up store is a milestone in the worldwide battle against plastic pollution."
YES TO GLASS
Glass containers can be a good alternative to plastic. They’re not 100 percent plastic free, because there’s a very thin layer in the coating of some lids, but we’re working on that. Our lids are free of bisphenol A, an industial chemical which may affect human health, but they will eventually contain no plastic. Glass is also a strong material that’s good at preserving the quality of the product – and it’s infinitely recyclable!
Bluewater – A source of good
The world uses more than one million plastic bottles every minute, mostly for drinking water. Less than 9 percent of these are recycled.
The Swedish company Bluewater cuts out plastic bottles by supplying technology that purifies drinking water on the spot. It’s cleaner, it’s healthier, and it’s helping to create a sustainable future without plastic bottles in our oceans. So it’s good for you, humanity, and the planet.
